Not many opera buffs would argue that Francesco Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur” is a great work. Still, this well-made and effective music drama, which enjoyed an enormously successful 1902 premiere in Milan, is a prime example of the verismo style then flourishing in Italy.
