Tuesday night’s concert in Avery Fisher Hall had a headline: “A Tribute to Arturo Toscanini.” It also had a description: “A Joint Gala Benefit Concert by the Symphonica Toscanini and the New York Philharmonic.” Toscanini, perhaps the most fabled conductor of the 20th century, died on January 16, 1957 ó and this event was held 50 years later, to the day. It was a most satisfying evening, too.
