Glyndebourne’s sumptuous new staging of Handel’s Alcina now available to stream on Glyndebourne Encore

Glyndebourne’s critically-acclaimed new production of Handel’s Alcina, which premiered at Glyndebourne Festival 2022, has just been released on Glyndebourne Encore.

Glyndebourne Encore is a new streaming platform giving on-demand access to highlights from Glyndebourne’s rich back catalogue of world-class opera, as well as all newly filmed productions. Every month it delves deep into an individual opera, with revealing insights and exclusive interviews.

Opera of the month for September is Francesco Micheli’s sumptuous new staging of Alcina, which draws on Italian history to put a contemporary spin on the opera and is the latest in a line of bold and inventive stagings of works by Handel at Glyndebourne, following Theodora, Rodelinda, Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo and Saul. Canadian coloratura soprano Jane Archibald stars in the title role, with Soraya Mafi as Morgana and Samantha Hankey as Ruggerio. Jonathan Cohen conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Glyndebourne Encore can be accessed via any web browser, Android / iOS mobile phones and tablets, Roku and Amazon Fire TV. An annual subscription costs £79.99 or £59.99 for Glyndebourne Members.

All four new productions from the 2022 Glyndebourne Festival were filmed live this summer for release on Glyndebourne Encore. Melly Still’s landmark production of The Wreckers is available now and live recordings of a Poulenc Double Bill and La bohème arrive on the platform in October and November respectively.
