Opera: An inquisition devoid of opinion

There are two ways of reading the Royal Operaís new Don Carlo. The first goes something like this: tenor-of-the-moment Rolando VillazÛn returns to the stage after months of indisposition and crowns a front-rank cast in a subtly delineated version of Verdiís Spanish drama, masterminded by ìthe most influential arts figure in the UKî ñ Nicholas Hytner of Londonís National Theatre.
